This is so much better than the alternative hissing noise
Knocks, Pops, or Bangs:

With the proliferation of turbocharged engines, Google searches surrounding these symptoms are increasing A LOT. Turns out there is a really good reason, because with some of the higher compression turbocharged engines you NEED to use good gasoline.

Octane is important, but in the case of many Upstate NY drivers the availability of significantly cheaper, untaxed gasoline on reservations is too good to pass up. However, it is unregulated and more often than not people have to find that out the hard way. Modern, high compression turbocharged engines HATE bad gas, so if it is bad youre going to find out in a hurry!

There are also a lot of banging sounds that can come from your suspension system if a component has failed. Youll notice this one more at speed or hitting a pothole.

Squealing:

The most telling factor when your car is making a squealing noise is what action you performed to cause the squealing. If you just start your car and it makes a squealing noise, it is more likely than not a serpentine, drive belt or other engine related component. If the squealing sound gets worse on acceleration this is likely the culprit. However, if you step on the brakes and a squealing noise pops up, it is likely to be a problem with the brake rotors, pads, or shoes.

Make note of whatever you just did that caused the squealing noise and tell us! This is the best way to get a proper diagnosis the first time because it is easier for us to replicate the concern and get you back in your car faster!

Clicking or Tapping:

This concern is more about where and can be a lot harder to replicate the specific conditions. If the clicking or tapping is coming from the engine bay, it typically means that there is a problem with oil pressure or valves. However, it could also be the first indicator that your engine is low on oil which can cause catastrophic failure, so engine bay tapping/clicking is something that you have to keep an eye on and do not want to ignore. It typically will not resolve itself without being addressed.

If the clicking or tapping is coming from under the car, odds are that it is a problem with an axle shaft or U joint. There are also a lot of components in the suspension that can manifest this type of sound.

Whining or Whirring:

Were not talking the are we there yet whining, we are talking about one of the most common sounds that says something is about to fail.

A more common failure that causes this to be noticeable to drivers are blower motors. Your entire car has a self contained HVAC system that regulates air flow with the use of one or multiple blower motors, and that noise can be seriously annoying when they are on the way out.

Whining or whirring can also signal the end of your power steering pump (or that it is low on fluid), a failing alternator, a bad wheel bearing, or in the most extreme and expensive cases- transmission problems. As with the above set of sounds and the age old real-estate adage, location, location, location If you can tell us where the problem is coming from the odds of a correct and quick diagnosis are better.

When a whirring noise is clearly coming from under your car, you could be about to have a whole lot of extra neutrals unless you get it to us ASAP. And for the love of God dont try to limp a car with a messed up transmission to us, just get it flat bedded.

Hissing:

Weirdly, this is the first noise that your car can make that incorporates all three states of matter. Hissing can come from a leak in a vacuum line (gas), a leak in a coolant line or possibly oil dripping onto a hot exhaust manifold (liquid) or in extremely rare cases in Rochester, it can come from something inside the car (solid).

The first two are fairly easy but can be made difficult because of the layout of modern cars. They have so many lines and hoses running under so many plastic shields that it can be genuinely hard to make heads or tails of what you're looking at, let alone finding the leak. The easiest way to find a coolant or oil leak is with a dye test which will circulate and leak a phosphorescent dye from wherever the leak is happening, literally highlighting it so we can fix it properly.

The other type of hissing can happen from something crawling into your car, or rather in the most terrifying cases, slithering into your car. Reptiles love heat. What does your car make a lot of when it's running? Heat. You can see where this is going. Believe me, it's not fun for us either. Thankfully this happens a lot more often in the southwest than a place where it randomly snows in mid April after a gorgeous March, but it has happened.

Grinding:

The simplest way to describe grinding noises with your car is that something round that is meant to rotate a specific way, isnt doing that because it probably isnt round anymore. Wheel bearings, brakes, differentials, transmissions. All of these things are designed to rotate and when they are grinding that means that they arent happy. Sometimes it can be an easy fix, sometimes it can be expensive and laborious. This depends entirely on what is making the grinding noise.

One special instance of this is actually more of a growling sound. When it comes to the wheel bearings this growling will get louder with speed and can be accurately diagnosed as a front wheel bearing if the growling noise changes in intensity when the wheel is turned in either direction. The odds of having multiple wheel bearings go out at the same time is low, but never zero depending on how well you or a previous owner has taken care of the car.

Rattling:

There are a lot of parts on a car that can make a rattling noise. Rattles over bumps or railroad tracks typically indicate a loose or worn suspension component. If you have a resonant rattle under the vehicle when started and at idle, exhaust systems and heat shields are the most common culprits here due to the rate at which salt destroys the underside of your car in Rochester.

However, there are also more facepalm worthy causes of a rattle in your car. Sometimes it can be the stuff you put it, and more often than not, forget to take out. So when a customer comes in with a complaint that states that it sounds like there is a bag of cans in the trunk of the car and we find a bag of cans in the trunk of the car, you can rest assured well be laughing with you, not at you.

So if your car is making any of these noises for any sustained period of time, take the trip down 104 to visit Cavallaro-Neubauer Chevrolet in Williamson. As we figured out in our last article, you want to take your GM truck/ car /investment /baby to the right dealership with good reviews of their service department.

The Chevy Traverse understands that you want to feel safe, because the world is chaotic! It does this through solid engineering and all of the right technology. Even the base Chevy Traverse has some truly science fiction safety features, including an automatic pedestrian braking that will stop you on a dime. The HD Surround vision displays in gorgeous high resolution on a massive Chevrolet Infotainment Screen that comes with native Apple Carplay, Android Auto, Google Voice Assist, and Google Maps for seamless media and communications streaming. There are tons of USB-C charging ports to make every long road trip a well-connected adventure. The second row captains chairs are comfortable, offering nice bolstering and adjustable legroom. There is even more room behind the third row than in previous generations, and the entire interior will fold flat with a few lever pulls when you need to get drywall into it. In the corners and slalom, this is a composed and calculated full-size crossover. It doesnt feel as big as it is, or nearly as wayward as something this tall should be. The suspension is solid at quick merges, and great on a long road trip. Best of all, with Super Cruise it will drive itself on the interstate. Seamless, effortlessly connected, and now semi-autonomous driving out of a comfortable, capable people-mover! The 2024 Chevrolet Traverse: Competition This is a seriously contested part of the market with a lot of new entries and some serious refreshes in the last year. Lets take a look at the Midsize Three-Row SUV Segment: Pros: Honda Pilot: Known for its reliability and spacious interior. Toyota Highlander: Offers a strong reputation for quality and fuel efficiency. Kia Telluride: Combines stylish design with a comfortable interior. Hyundai Palisade: Shares a platform with the Telluride but offers a slightly different look. Ford Explorer: Provides a blend of car-like handling and SUV capability Cons: Honda Pilot: the new one is pretty excellent, Slight edge interior to Traverse Toyota Highlander: Solid, sturdy, but boring Kia Telluride: Base is lacking, still a Kia Hyundai Palisade: Expensive Hyundai - still a Hyundai Ford Explorer: The base ones dont get it done, and the ST will bankrupt you if you drive it hard enough. The mid-size three-row crossover that was benchmarked for the track testing was the Ford Explorer - which as we found out was a marquee that just about everyone, in one form or another, has had some contact with! In pit lane, the lack of interior materials quality was evident in the Explorer. The Ford Sync is familiar, but not as intuitive as the Chevrolet Infotainment - call it bias. The handling was nice, but the 3.3L naturally aspirated V6 was lackluster and the body roll in the slalom was out of the Poseidon Adventure. A poor showing, but the one that you should get if youre considering an Explorer is the ST - being one of the best 7-seaters we drove last year. 2024 Chevrolet Traverse : Comfortable & Confident The 2.5L Turbocharged Inline-4 is the right engine for this chassis. It fits it like a glove and the 8-speed automatic transmission keeps you in the power beautifully while intelligently distributing the power to all four corners. Everything that you touch - makes sense, feels nice, and tells you everything that you need to know. The 2024 Chevy Traverse is planted, but never feels heavy - and that is nice for something that can fit this many carseats, and be festooned with that many Cheerios. The Traverse still tows 5,000 lbs, but if you need big towing numbers out of your family-hauler, youre looking at a Tahoe or Suburban depending on how big your dogs are. It does everything that a midsize three-row crossover needs to do well, and with tons of connectivity, charging, and character. We think that your family is going to love the new Traverse, and you can test drive it today at Cavallaro-Neubauer Chevrolet.

2024 Chevy Traverse Driving Dynamics and Interior If that seems super specific for something that is going to get a lot of time running to soccer and baseball, youd be correct! However, we got the opportunity to use the all new Chevy Traverse to the ragged edge at the Chevrolet Experience in Monticello NY. Colorado

Pros: Ford Ranger: Offering a strong balance of capability and comfort, with a variety of trims to choose from. Toyota Tacoma: Renowned for its durability and off-road prowess, with a loyal following. Nissan Frontier: Provides a classic truck feel with modern updates, offering a strong value proposition. Honda Ridgeline: A unique option with car-like handling and a spacious bed, appealing to those seeking a crossover-like experience. Cons: Ford Ranger: Interior quality can be inconsistent across trims. Toyota Tacoma: Interior can feel outdated compared to newer rivals. Nissan Frontier: Technology features might lag behind competitors. Honda Ridgeline: Not a traditional pickup truck for those seeking heavy-duty capabilities. You will break this one in half. The new Chevy Colorado is brimming with technology, but still understands the importance of having buttons for your HVAC, because it gets cold here in Upstate, NY! Sometimes you have to operate those controls with gloves. 2024 Chevrolet Colorado Trims: W/T, LT, Z71, Trail Boss, and ZR2 Where the 2024 Chevrolet Colorado excels in its ability to have a trim for every application. The basis of that is the 2.7L DOHC Turbocharged inline-4, in three spice levels across the various trims with the Turbo Plus option upgrading to 420 ft/lbs of torque with a simple tune. 2.7-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine: This engine is available in two different power outputs: Turbo: 237 horsepower and 260 lb-ft of torque (standard on WT and LT trims) TurboMax: 310 horsepower and 430 lb-ft of torque (standard on Trail Boss, Z71, and ZR2 trims; optional on WT and LT trims) All Colorado models come paired with an eight-speed automatic transmission. Max towing for the Chevrolet Colorado with max trailering package and 4WD is 7,700 lbs. Colorado: When the Road Ends Entirely Where this story gets interesting is where the road ends entirely. The Trail Boss trim gives added skid plates and off-road suspension to an already excellent platform when the road disappears entirely. However, the show stopper is the ZR2. This is where we resume with the Chevrolet Experience at Monticello NY - where we arrive via air conditioned limo bus, to a row of Brand New Chevrolet Colorado ZR2 and ZR2 Bisons, that you cant tell what color they are because they are so caked with mud. This was the exact moment you could tell the country boys from the suburban, and metropolis folks - we were unanimously grinning from ear to ear! For insurance reasons, we took the off road course incredibly slowly, but that really highlighted the technical masterclass going on with the ZR2 suspension and drivetrain. The DSSV MultiMatic shocks soaked up incredible punishment, and allowed for incredible body lean and articulation out of such a stout and powerful midsize truck. The TurboMax did not disappoint, applying just the right amount of torque when you needed it. The locking differentials and incredible 13 camera system allowed for seamless transitions between obstacles and full stops on incredible grades. As an out of the box off-roader the ZR2 has some serious chops. Then the professionals got involved, and things got sideways and airborne. As a Baja Prerunner, the ZR2 is fantastic. It builds boost with the best of the Group B giants, and with that trick suspension and differential system you get just the right amount of power in all of the right spots for perfect drifts, soft landings, and incredible off-road control. The way that the suspension squats down when youre building boost is amazing to watch, and the way it remains composed on loose surfaces despite incredible speeds is a testament to the technical masterclass going on with this truck and the skill of their pilots. One of the funniest things that we have ever said about the ZR2 trim is the feeling that you get that it is ready to run bricks for El Chapo right out of the box. With the Colorado you get the genuine feeling that it is a tube-frame exo-skeleton and external fuel cell away from running the Dakar. Now you just have to throw a hot tune and trick suspension in your buddies clapped Iveco for a support truck! Bottom line, if you are looking for the most connected and off-road capable midsize truck to make your memories with - the Chevrolet Colorado is a genuinely excellent pick in a tough field of very good trucks. Take yours for a test drive today at Cavallaro-Neubauer Chevrolet in Williamson - just a short drive from Rochester, NY!
