The first experience that we had with the Chevrolet Silverado EV at the Chevrolet Experience in Monticello NY was a track experience showing off the WoW mode, interior, drive modes, 4-wheel steering, and overall power of the Chevrolet Silverado EV RST. This is a seriously spacious crew cab, with more than enough legroom and charging to go around. We didnt get to explore the midgate system just yet – we had track time. From a dig, the Wide Open Watts mode launches this truck sitting on 8-lugs to 60 MPH in an astonishing 4.1 seconds with a fair amount of torque steer. This is achieved by a blistering 754 horsepower and 785 ft/lbs of torque through dual motors feeding power to all four wheels. Four wheels that also steer, by the way. The sensation of the back end coming around on you in a low speed corner is slightly terrifying if youve ever been in a car where the rear control arms have given out – but in this application is ridiculously smooth and controlled. Despite its immense displacement, you can parallel park this anywhere.
With a trailer behind you, and pulling a brand new Traverse just for good measure, the sensation gets even weirder. Its like its not even there. Sure the acceleration is a bit hampered, but the incredible control and how much thinking that this truck is doing for you is something to behold. The integrated trailer brake is actually integrated into the truck to give it just the right amount of vehicle kinetic energy braking, and just the right amount of trailer braking to make it feel that up to 10,000 lbs isnt even there. This truck uses technology and makes you better at driving it with a load on the back. The air ride suspension levels out the load intelligently based on the inputs that you put into the Chevrolet Infotainment powered by Google.
Even in work truck form, the Chevrolet Silverado EV is a winner. Instant torque, AWD, a super low center of gravity, and slightly more user friendly tires give this EV a ton of jobsite bravado – being able to power multiple tools and charge up all of your batteries with the addition of 3 AC outlets in the rear, one being 220 to run your camper.
The Chevrolet Infotainment is what actually makes this one of the most user friendly EV pickup trucks there is. It is preloaded with Google to analyze your route and your battery consumption to optimize your route for fast charging and travel. It tells you where you need to charge, for how long, and has various inputs that you can select to optimize your trip. This is a wickedly smart system that makes it easy to use every single day and can save you thousands in generator fuel costs on your jobsite in years to come.
The biggest headline though for many was the return of the midgate cargo system made incredibly popular on the Chevrolet Avalanche and Escalade ESV. This essentially gives a crew cab pickup long box cargo capability by removing the rear glass and folding down the rear seats. This entire operation took seconds. It is seamless and gives an incredible 10 ft. 10 inches to play with for your cargo. Its also great to drive around in an open backed pickup truck that makes SciFi noises with Bose Sound streaming all of your music, podcasts, and more.
